“People are disappointed in economic conditions and the amount of debt the President has racked up, but he hasn’t lost these voters because of these problems. They sense that this is all a show. There is no roadmap, no program, and no conviction of where the President wants to lead the country. Participants say that Obama reminds them of their hometown baseball team, the Colorado Rockies (lots of promise but not a pennant).”

'A panel of business and academic leaders warned funding cuts to higher education are hurting the global competitiveness of U.S. research universities, the latest sign of financial strain that is intensifying battles over school leadership and has led to several high-profile departures of university presidents. U.S. research universities "are in grave danger of not only losing their place of global leadership but of serious erosion in quality," the committee of 22 academic, business and nonprofit leaders warned in a 250-page report issued Thursday. The report, commissioned by Congress, called for a combined effort among the schools, governments and corporations to reverse the decline.' -

“Potential EU membership is a long-term issue. It’s about the future. This is certainly a very serious crisis that the EU countries are going through. We’ll obviously have to monitor the developments very well, but we certainly hope that the EU will manage its way through this crisis.”

 - Stefán Haukur Jóhannesson, Iceland’s chief negotiator in Iceland’s accession talks to join the EU.
My story on the negotiations is in today’s Reykjavík Grapevine. Photo by Alísa Kalyanova

Anonymous asked: What meat would you eat for lunch on a date?

ah! in my months of ignoring Tumblr, I missed this anon.

to answer seriously, probably turkey. that’s the most socially acceptable lunch meat I’d say. also my favorite.

The Economist liked my Tumblr post.

I feel like that should be a line on my resume.

I interviewed people in downtown Iceland last night about the June 30 presidential election. The president is essentially a figurehead in Iceland, but he or she does have one very important power: sending a law that Parliament passes to national referendum. This was important here.
This election, a seven-person race, is shaping up to be a battle of “two towers” — TV journalist Þora Arnórsdóttir vs. four-term incumbent president Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson. Þora has run on the platform that she won’t infuse the office with politics, like Ólafur has. At an event I went to yesterday, she said she’d be the “nice president.”
Here’s what one Icelander, a 29-year-old Ph.D. student named Ásta (pictured), said:
“I want something else than the president we have now. I know that’s a bad argument, but all the five others, they have pretty similar strategies. They mostly say the same things. But there’s something about Þóra that makes me trust her. I like the way she emphasizes how she won’t have a political strategy. I like that because I think we’ve had enough of that.”

Chart of the day: Sheldon Adelson could find $10 million in his couch cushions.

His $10 mil is the same as $40 for the average person. Wish that was hiding in my couch cushions.

What’s 10 mil to a casino tycoon like me? Apparently FORTY DOLLARS.

The new Blue Jays logo (and by new, I mean old because it’s sort of throwback) is the absolute shit. If the Jays weren’t in the Red Sox division, I’d buy their apparel. It’s classy as fuck and adorable.
Judging uniform designs is a true past time of mine. Should’ve known I was gay when I was 8 years old and analyzing the Florida Marlins change in color scheme from one shade of teal to another.
